Govt cancels corporatisation of Customs

PETALING JAYA: The proposed corporatisation of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department has been cancelled, said its Director-General Datuk Seri Subromaniam Tholasy.
It will not proceed with any studies related to the proposed corporatisation of the agency responsible for the collection of the now-defunct Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The department will remain under the current structure and report to the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
"It has been shelved. (As such) nothing changes. It is status-quo," Subromaniam was quoted by The Malaysian Reserve as saying yesterday.
Former prime minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak announced in March 2017 that the government would continue with the Customs Department's corporatisation exercise.
However, the idea was postponed this January, citing further studies were required for the department to move forward.
The Customs Department was responsible for the implementation of GST, which had been zero-rated by the Pakatan Harapan government.
The proposed exercise would see a different organisational structure, administration independence and remuneration packages for the over 14,000 staff.
