KUALA LUMPUR: Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia revealed that the number of non-Chinese undertaking academic courses in Taiwan is on the upward trend.
Its representative James Chang Chi-ping said this was evident as there are more successful recipients for the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship as compared to last year.
"Last year, we have only three successful non-Chinese recipients whereas this year we have nine successful recipients.
"This shows that the Mandarin course or the English-taught programme offered by some of the Taiwan universities are gaining it momentum and popularity among the non-Chinese students," Chang said after presenting some 44 Malaysian students their scholarship certificates.
These 44 Malaysian students comprise of 35 Taiwan's Education Ministry Scholarship recipients and nine Huayu Enrichment Scholarship recipients.
Chang mentioned that most of the Taiwan scholarship recipients will be majoring in Chinese, Engineering, Business Administration, Health, Mass Communication and Education.
While congratulating each of the recipients, Chang hoped that once they have completed their studies in Taiwan, the recipient could contribute to the Malaysia society and plays an important role in strengthening the bilateral academic collaboration and cultural exchange between the two countries.
"In order to facilitate Taiwan government's New Southbound Policy, the government have indeed increased the number of scholarship on offer from the initial 20 slots in 2016 to the current 35 slots.
"In fact, Taiwan's government is offering various scholarship opportunities for Malaysian students to further their studies in Taiwan which is why the number of applicants increased each year," he said.
