High Court to hear Tasek Gelugor election petition on Aug 15

GEORGE TOWN: The High Court will hear an election petition by senator Marzuki Yahya on the Tasek Gelugor election results on Aug 15.
High Court Judge Hashim Hamzah will hear the preliminary objections by both parties, including the incumbent Tasek Gelugor MP.
Following the decision in chambers, Marzuki's counsel Mohamad Rafique Rashid Ali said issues related to the petition will be heard, while both parties will settle the objections raised.
Rafique and Azlina Mehtab Mohd Ishaq appeared for Marzuki, while Barisan Nasional incumbent Datuk Shabudin Yahaya was represented by Simon Tan and Cynthia Loo.
The Election Commission (EC) was represented by Sathya Kumardas.
On June 12, Marzuki who is also Penang Parti Pribumi Bersatu chairman filed the petition and named Shabudin as the first respondent, the returning officer for Tasek Gelugor as the second respondent and the Malaysian Election Commission as the third respondent.
In his application, Marzuki petitioned that a by-election for the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat should be held.
In the 14th General Election on May 9, Marzuki who contested under the PKR ticket lost to Shabudin with only a majority of 81 votes. Marzuki obtained 18,466 votes against Shabudin (18,547) while PAS candidate Rizal Hafiz Ruslan garnered 14,891 votes.
