Muslim NGO's protest against Ramasamy in support of Zakir Naik

GEORGE TOWN: Several hundred protesters from Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) staged a protest against Deputy Chief Minister II Prof. P. Ramasamy's call for controversial preacher Zakir Naik to be extradited back to India.
The scores of disgruntled protesters staged the protest after Friday prayers at the Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff in Datuk Keramat.
Chants of "Tangkap Ramasamy" could be heard as the group called for Ramasamy to respect Islam as the official religion of the federation.
Plainclothes and uniformed policemen were in attendance to prevent the situation from escalating.
Salman Ali, a spokesman representing the Institut Al Qayyim, said the Prai assemblyman should show his respect for Islam as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
He urged for a thorough investigation to be carried out against Ramasamy while saying a memorandum on the issue would be submitted to the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and the state government on Saturday.
Salman said Zakir had not done anything wrong and urged Ramasamy not to harp on the preacher.
" He must remember that he is only the Deputy Chief Minister II in the state and does not hold any post in the Cabinet. Why does he keep on harping on Zakir, " he said.
In a press conference earlier, Ramasamy urged the police to investigate certain groups who had falsely accused him of having links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
He said they should be investigated for criminal intimidation under the Penal Code.
Commenting on the issue of Zakir, Ramasamy said he was merely urging the government to honour its extradition treaty with India.
