Tun M to discuss contracts during visit to China

KUALA LUMPUR: Contracts involving projects between Malaysia and China will be the main agenda during Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's visit to Beijing next month.
"My visit, basically is to follow up on what Tun Daim Zainuddin has done.
"He has brought up certain subjects with regards to the contract given out and the fact that Malaysia does not have the money," said the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Chairman in a press conference after chairing the party's Supreme Leadership Council Meeting here today.
It was reported that Chairman of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) Tun Daim Zainuddin is in China in a bid to renegotiate the loans and contracts that Putrajaya previously inked with Chinese companies.
Yesterday, Dr Mahathir said Daim was trying to renegotiate the deals that were costly and that part of the money was not really needed.
Commenting further, Dr Mahathir said Malaysia could not afford to borrow too much money.
"We are trying to reduce the money we have borrowed, otherwise the country can go bankrupt," he said.
He pointed out that during the visit, he would invite Chinese companies to come and invest in Malaysia.
"Invest in productive capacities in this country using Malaysian labour and sources," he added. — Bernama
