PETALING JAYA: Lokman Adam Mohd Noor is Umno's choice to contest in the Sungai Kandis by-election.
Following Barisan Nasional's defeat in the 14th general election (GE14), Lokman was frequently in the news for defending former premier Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, and organising rallies in solidarity with the latter.
An online news portal reported that the announcement of his candidacy was confirmed by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan at a press conference in Shah Alam.
Speaking to the news portal, Lokman said the Sungai Kandis by-election would show if the rakyat truly approved of the policies and decisions made by the Pakatan Harapan administration.
Lokman said if he wins the by-election, he would monitor the new government, especially on the promises made to the rakyat.
He will be contesting against PKR's Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, who is the party's Religious Understanding and Consolidation Bureau secretary.
Mohd Zawawi's candidacy was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on Friday night.
The by-election is being held following the death of the assemblyman, Mat Shuhaimi, of lymphoma cancer on July 2.
The seat saw a four-cornered fight in GE14 between PKR, Umno, PAS and Parti Rakyat Malaysia.
Mat Shuhaimi won the seat with 23,998 votes with Umno coming in second with 11,518 votes, and PAS with 7,573 votes.
