Machete-wielding senior citizen robs petrol kiosk in Miri

MIRI: Three people were injured when a machete-wielding 57-year old man attacked and robbed a petrol kiosk in Senadin at 6.45pm yesterday.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Denis Leong Soon Kuai said those injured were the two women manning the cashier counter, while the third victim was the father of one of the cashiers who happened to be at the kiosk when the robbery took place.
"The two women at the counter sustained injuries, managed to escape and are now in stable condition in Miri Hospital while the father of one of the cashiers only suffered minor injuries," he said in a statement today.
Denis said the robbery suspect was at the petrol kiosk on the pretence of shopping when he suddenly brandished the machete and attacked the two victims on duty.
"The suspect then smashed the cash register and took about RM2,000," he said, adding that members of the public who heard the commotion were quick to find the culprit.
At the same time, he said, the father of one of the cashiers also tried to apprehend the suspect and was slightly injured in the process.
He said the lone robber was quickly apprehended by members of the public 500m away from the crime location and was subsequently arrested by the police.
"The suspect was slightly injured and was taken to Miri Hospital for treatment before being detained for further investigation under section 394/397 of the Penal Code," he said.
He said the suspect has been remanded for six days until July 29 to assist in the investigation.
The gruesome act of the suspect slashing the two victims, aged 19 and 23, were recorded by the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and went viral on social media today with some netizens claiming the suspect was mentally unsound. — Bernama
