SHAH ALAM: PKR's candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni is not worried about Barisan Nasional (BN) working with PAS in the Sungai Kandis by-election, as he confident that he can win over the 7,000 or so hardcore PAS supporters in the area.
The Tahfiz school principal said the PAS supporters would vote for him as he is "Islamic minded" and has a good rapport with them.
"I am not shaken at all by the possibility of an Umno-PAS cooperation," Mohd Zawawi said at a press conference today.
The PKR Religious and Understanding Bureau secretary said he intends to turn Sungai Kandis into the cleanest state constituency in Selangor.
"The rural and urban areas in Sungai Kandis can be safe and free from any pollution," he said. "Illegal dumpings and air pollution are among the main complaints raised by the public during my greet-and-meet session."

He urged the authorities to take immediate action against those who violate environmental laws. He would propose to the higher authorities to come up with a comprehensive masterplan for a cleaner environment.
Mohd Zawawi is going up against Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam and independent candidate K. Murthy.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei from PKR on July 2, after battling lymphatic cancer.

In the 14th General Election in May, Mat Shuhaimi retained the seat (formerly known as Sri Muda) for the third term by polling 23,998 votes to beat Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari of BN (11,518 votes), Mohd Yusof Abdullah of PAS (7,573) and Hanafiah Husin of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (76). Mat Shuhaimi secured a majority of 12,480 votes.

The Sungai Kandis constituency has 51,230 registered voters, comprising 51,217 ordinary voters and 13 overseas voters.
