Four receive cash awards from British Council

THE British Council awarded a sum of RM60,500 to four outstanding International English Language Testing System (IELTS) students. Regional awards are given to the top three students in both East Asia and Southeast Asia.
Regional winner, 18-year-old Cheah Zoe, was presented with a cash award of RM27,500. This is the second time a Malaysian student has won the regional prize; the last was the year before.
Three other Malaysians also received local awards of RM11,000 each. They comprised Lena Chua Chun Yen, Magdalene Rose de Rozario and B.Vaneitha Balakrishnan.
Said regional winner Cheah who has a deep interest in genetics and immunology and intends to read biological science, "I never really thought that taking the IELTS would land me this opportunity ... I am truly grateful.
"I am really happy that all my hard work has paid off," said Cheah who scored 8.5 points out of 9.0.
Local award winner Chua had the same sentiments. "I did not expect it at all. I only found out about the IELTS prize a week before the closing date, so I quickly went online and applied for it," said Chua who scored 8.0 points.
"I am absolutely over the moon and very grateful to the British Council for giving me the award because the sum of money will help reduce my financial burden when I pursue my studies there."
Chua, a litigation lawyer, will begin her Masters in Law at the University of Durham in October. She said the money will go towards her tuition fees. "I am really excited to start my journey in the UK," she said.
At the prize presentation ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel in KL, British Council Malaysia director Sarah Deverall shared that the British Council office in Malaysia was first established back in 1948.
"In 2018, we are marking our 70th anniversary with a series of events celebrating cultural relations and exchange between UK and Malaysia, so we are particularly pleased to present the IELTS prize to our winners in this special year," she added.
