IPOH: The Human Resources Ministry has called for a concerted effort by all stakeholders including employers, employees and non-governmental organisations to reduce workplace-related accidents in the country.
Its Minister M.Kulasegaran in making the call said according to statistics, a total of 42,513 accident cases were recorded at the workplace throughout the country last year, equivalent to about 116 cases every day.
He said out of the figure, 711 were fatal accidents, with an average of two deaths were recorded daily.
"The initiative to reduce the rate of workplace accident cases is in line with the principle of self-regulation which has become one of the core disciplines of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
"The Principles and Philosophy of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 have stated that the responsibility to ensure the safety and health of workers at the workplace lies with those who create and work with the risks," he said.
He said this in his speech at the closing of the Occupational Safety and Health Week (OSH Week) 2018 at Malay-Sini Chemical Industri Sdn Bhd here today.
Carrying the theme ' Workplace Accident Free Week', the OSH Week 2018 drew the participation of some 320,000 employees nationwide. — Bernama
