Recognise the UEC examinations

31 Jul 2018 / 20:52 H.

THERE are many Malay and Indian families who send their children to Chinese schools.
As such, apart from the Chinese, there will be many Malay and Indian students sitting for the UEC examination.
Therefore, non-recognition of UEC will effect students from all races.
It will deny these students the opportunity to have tertiary education as many of their parents cannot afford to send their children to private institutions or overseas to get it.
It will be unfair to deny these students the opportunity to have tertiary education in public institutions.
Many Malay students who took part and won awards in Mandarin speaking competitions in China wore the Malay traditional costume with tudung.
These Malay students who are proficient in Mandarin are also proficient in Bahasa Malaysia.
Therefore the arguments that recognition of UEC will erode the importance of Bahasa Malaysia does not hold much water.
We hope that the recognition of UEC will be done within the context of education and not otherwise.
