KUALA LUMPUR: Irate over the behaviour of a group of drunken assailants who assaulted a couple for advising them to behave, residents of a housing area took the law into their own hands by beating one of the suspects.
In the 6.30pm incident on Sunday, the husband and wife who are locals were on their way home to Jinjang Utara after picking up their children from a relative's home when they chanced upon 10 drunken men near their apartment.
"The 10 drunken men were loitering at a playground near the victims' apartment. They were provocative and making a nuisance of themselves. Two of them started revving the motorbikes continuously. The woman approached the group and advised them to behave appropriately as their action was causing uneasiness among the residents," said Sentul district police chief ACP R. Munusamy today.
Angry with the woman's word, two men from the group approached her and scolded the couple with profanities.
"The duo also threatened the woman that she will be assaulted. The woman then got involved in an argument with the men who then assaulted her. One of the men punched and kicked her," added Munusamy.
Some of the residents who noticed the incident, chased the men, particularly the man who assaulted the woman.
In a four-minute video that went viral on social media, the residents can be seen taking the law into their own hands by beating up the suspect.
A group of people were seen in the video assaulting the suspect and the suspect was unconscious at the end of the video.
Munusamy said police have initiated an investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
