Sungai Kandis by-election candidates campaign differently

AS campaign for the Sungai Kandis state by-election enters the last stretch, PKR, which is strong in the state, clearly has the edge, and its candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, is expected to help Pakatan Harapan (PH) retain the seat.
Mohd Zawawi is facing BN candidate, Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, and independent candidate, government pensioner K. Murthy in a three-way fight.
For the last 10 days, both PKR and Umno were pulling out all stops to garner support though using totally different strategies.
Umno, with the backing of PAS, has positioned itself as defender of the Malays in an attempt to not only retain the number of votes it received in the 14th General Election but also to win over the support of voters who are not happy with the performance of PH so far and those who voted for PAS in GE14, Oriental Daily News reported today.
PKR, on the other hand, is continuing with what late assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei had been championing before his death forced the by-election: bread and butter issues the locals are facing and the rights of minority groups.
Both camps have mobilised party heavyweights to canvass for their candidates, a clear indication that both PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) are all out to win the first by-election post GE14.
But unlike PKR's ceramah, which attract capacity crowds, Umno, which is campaign without the help of its BN partners – MCA, Gerakan and MIC – and with far less resources at its disposal than during GE14 now that BN no longer runs the federal government, is not seeing very encouraging reception during its walkabouts and meet-the-voters sessions.
