JOHOR BARU: An estimated 6,670 small traders in the city here will have their hawker licence fee waived starting from Aug 11.
Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) mayor Amran A Rahman today said the council would forgo an annual collection of RM1.6 million with the waiver.
The free hawking licence was one of the promises in Johor's Pakatan Harapan manifesto for the 14th General Election.
Amran said all 15 local councils in the state will take part on the launch of the waiver by Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian.
Hawker licences have been abused by some owners who rent them to third parties, including illegal immigrants.
Amran said the council has discovered 20 out of 25 foreign hawkers operating in the city operating without licences. He said the crackdown on illegal foreign hawkers would continue.
