SANDAKAN: The Sabah Wildlife Department is finding it difficult to catch elephant killers because witnesses fear coming forward despite the offer of a RM120,000 reward.
Its director Augustine Tuuga said the reward was for information that could hold up in court.
The department was serious about nabbing the culprits but needed the cooperation of the people in bringing them to book, he said in a statement.
It was in response to a spate of deaths of the endangered animals which were shot or snared in traps in jungles and plantations in the state.
In the latest incident, a cow elephant aged between 12 and 15 years was found dead with a gunshot wound in the head in the Bintang Emas oil palm plantation in Tongod on Saturday. — Bernama
