PETALING JAYA: Did Customs director-general Datuk Seri T. Subromaniam learn the hard way how tough it is getting through a telephone helpline?

China Press reported that Subromaniam hung up the phone after struggling to demonstrate how his own department's Sales and Service Tax (SST) hotline worked during a SST briefing in Johor Baru yesterday.
The newspaper said Subromaniam called the hotline on stage to show that the support service was operational.
He was greeted by an automated voice that asked him to choose from several options. He was said to have taken more than a minute to get through all the steps.
However, when he was finally done, he was put on hold. This prompted the crowd burst into laughter, and he subsequently hung up.
Subromaniam was reported as saying the SST hotline was available daily, except on public holidays. "They (hotline operators) are supposed to work until midnight, that's what I'm saying," he added.
