Woman loses RM34,101 to foreigner she met on Facebook

KUANTAN: A 60-year-old woman paid a heavy price for befriending and trusting an acquaintance on Facebook after she was cheated off RM34,101 last month.
Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the victim said she wanted to help a man known as Ying Jimmy, who claimed to be an American, to start a business here.
"The suspect who befriended the victim in July said he had sent a parcel containing US$1 million (RM4 million) to her which was expected to arrive on Aug 15," he told reporters here today.
A few days later, the victim received calls, demanding that she settle a few payments, including for insurance, to the tune of RM34,101.
Mohd Wazir said the victim lodged a police report today after realising she had been cheated.
