SHAH ALAM: Police have denied making any new arrests in connection with the murder of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor (pix) said there was no truth to the news that the two stepchildren of the victim were detained by police.
"I can confirm that no new arrests were made in connection to this case," he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters today.
When pressed about the motive of the murder, he declined to comment adding that the case is still under investigation and commenting on it would jeopardise the probe.
Meanwhile, Selangor CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat is expected to release a statement later today on the development on the case.
On Tuesday, Nazrin's wife, Samirah Muzaffar was arrested to assist in investigations into his murder.
Police also arrested the woman's 43-year-old ex-husband.
Nazrin, 45, was initially reported to have died of smoke inhalation from a fire that broke out in a room at his double-storey terrace house in Mutiara Damansara on June 14, the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
At the time it was believed the fire that occurred past noon was caused by an explosion from the victim's mobile phone that was being charged.
It was reported that Nazrin had suffered 30% burns and other injuries from the explosion.
It is said that he had earlier gone to sleep after complaining of a headache.
The case was classified by police as sudden death.
More than a week after the fire, Fire and Rescue Department investigators who carried out tests on samples gathered at the fire found traces of petrol, opening up suspicions of foul play.
The case was reclassified as murder and police commenced investigations soon after.
Just three weeks ago Samirah was reported to have lashed out at the Fire and Rescue Department for keeping her and her family in the dark about the probe into her husband's death.
