IPI up 2.6% in July 2018

    PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) expanded 2.6% in July 2018 as compared with the same month of the previous year, supported by an increase in manufacturing (5.2%) and electricity (4.5%). 
    The index of mining posted a decrease of 5.9%.
    The Statistics Department said the manufacturing sector output was up 5.2% in July 2018 after recording a growth of 4.5% in June 2018, driven by increases in major sub-sectors electrical & electronic equipment products (8.0%), petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (4.0%) and transport equipment and other manufactures products (13.5%). 
    The electricity output grew at a faster rate of 4.5% in July 2018 following the 3.0% rise in June 2018. 
    Meanwhile, the mining sector output registered a decline of 5.9% in July 2018 as compared to the same period of the previous year, due to the decrease in the natural gas index (-15.2%). The crude oil index, however, increased 4.5%.
