PETALING JAYA: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, who has already made known his intention to contest the party top post in November, is tipped to have Perak MCA chief Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon as his running mate.
It is not the first time that the two are teaming up in party elections. In 2008, Mah was Wee's running mate when the latter contested the Youth chief post.
According to a report in China Press today, the partnership with Wee, who hails from Johor – a state with a large pool of delegates – will greatly boost the chances of Mah, who already has the backing of 18 divisions in Perak, another state with a large number of delegates
It is learnt that former vice-president Gan Ping Sieu, as well as vice-president Datuk Chua Tee Yong, are also eyeing the party top post.
However, neither Gan nor Chua has given any clear indications on the posts they are going for although a party source said Gan is more likely to give Wee a run for his money.
The source also said Gan will pick Johor MCA deputy chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong as his running mate.
As Tee is regarded as belonging to former party chief Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek's camp, Tee Yong, who is Soi Lek's son, is likely to seek re-election to his current post should the Gan-Tee team materialise.
As the party is still reeling from its worst polls defeat in the 14th general election, its grassroots leaders have called on the top leadership to avoid bitter fights for senior posts in the coming party elections.
