JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry has formed a committee to address the shortage of teachers in Johor, Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak, said Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching.
Teo said this during her opening speech at the National Education Research and Innovation Conference (PPIPK) 2018 at the Temenggong Ibrahim Teacher's Education Institute here on Wednesday.
She said the Education Ministry had identified the cost of living and posting to rural areas as the two main reasons for the shortage of teachers.
"Maybe we need more incentives to attract teachers to accept postings in rural areas," she, however, added that the problem was still manageable.
In July, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said most teachers preferred to be posted to their hometowns or smaller towns and not cities.
