SHAH ALAM: An application to revoke the remand order against the two stepsons of the late Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan was granted by the High Court today.
High Court judge Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman allowed the application by lawyers Hisyam Teh Poh Teik and LS Leonard, who represented the teenagers, aged 14 and 16.
The two brothers were freed from their remand as the judge ruled that their arrest was not justified and failed to link their arrest to the murder investigation.
"The reason given for the remand was that it was needed to recover case evidence. But I was told that when they were arrested the archery equipment was recovered. So why would police need a seven-day remand as the case evidence like the arrows have already been found," the judge said.
Objections raised by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli was also rejected.
The two brothers were remanded on Sunday after Magistrate Nor Ariffin Hisham granted the remand application ending Sept 15.
They were arrested at their grandfather's home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail around 4pm on Saturday.
On Sept 4, police had arrested a female suspect and her ex-husband who were remanded for a week to assist in the murder probe.
The ex-husband was freed after the remand order ended on Sept 7, while the female suspect's remand was extended until Thursday (Sept 13).
On June 14, Nazrin was found dead after being trapped in a fire on the upper floor of his house in Mutiara Damansara with burnt marks on 30% of his body.
Nazrin was initially reported as having died in a fire at his home where his mobile phone, which was charging next to him as he was sleeping, had exploded.
On Aug 3, Selangor police Criminal Investigation Department chief, Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat had said that Nazrin's death had been reclassified as murder.
This came about after the Fire and Rescue Department's forensic report said traces of petrol were found at the crime scene. An autopsy report also showed that Nazrin had wounds at the back of his head.
