Johor top cop cautions the public on the spread fake news

JOHOR BARU: Johor police have cautioned the public against spreading fake news on social media.
Commenting on the viral video of a five-year-old boy being kidnapped in Kota Tinggi, Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the facts of the case was very different from what was portrayed in the video.
"The fact is that the boy was playing outside his house, the driver made an emergency brake as the boy was running near the roadside," he said after attending the state police contingent monthly assembly at the state police headquarters today.
He said another video of the murder of a family in Simpang Renggam was also fake news.
Mohd Khalil warned the public not to spread these fake video as it is an offence under Section 233(1)(a) of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act 1998 for initiating the transmission of such content.
The penalty is a fine of up to RM50,000 or a one-year jail term or both upon conviction.
Earlier, he said the police had successfully reduced the crime index for the first eight months of this year by 8.72% as compared to the same period last year.
Johor recorded 6,884 criminal cases this year as compared to 7,542 cases last year.
For narcotics cases, he said police have seized some 544.19kg of drugs worth RM19.49 million in the first eight months of this year.
