KOTA BARU: Two Prisons Department personnel were sentenced to jail and fined RM15,000 each by the sessions court here today, after they were found guilty of corruption.
Judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin ordered Prisons Chief Inspector Mohd Zamri Abdullah, 39, and Lance Corporal Dzul Azam Nani, 34, to be jailed for three years and two years, respectively, for the offence.
Mohd Zamri was charged with accepting RM3,000 from Mohd Fakhrul Akashah Mat as an inducement that he would not take action against one Wan Muhammad Azlan Wan Mahamood, who allegedly tested positive for drugs, when detained at the Pengkalan Chepa Prison.
Dzul Azam was charged with accepting the bribe from Mohd Fakhrul Akashah on behalf of Mohd Zamri at 6pm on Dec 20, 2016 at a fast food outlet in Baung, Pengkalan Chepa here, before handing the money to Mohd Zamri at 10.15pm at JKR 295A Pengkalan Chepa Prison quarters on the same day.
However, the court allowed a stay of the sentence following their request to appeal against the sentence.
Ahmad Bazli then set bail of RM4,000 each.
In mitigation, Dzul Azam and Mohd Zamri, represented by lawyers Ahmad Nizam Mohamed and Shaharuddin Mohamed, respectively, told the court that they had families to support.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Shahidah Muslimah Roslan. — Bernama
