BALIK PULAU: Police have launched a manhunt for a 29-year-old man who is the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of his 63-year-old widow mother at a house in Kampung Sungai Burung here, some 50 km from George Town here.
The victim's body with stab wounds was found inside a septic tank behind her house by her son-in-law around 3 pm on Monday after she went missing for the past week.
The septic tank was 1.5 metres deep, said southwest district police head Asst Comm A. Anbalagan.
Detectives with sniffer dogs were deployed to locate the suspect, who is also believed to be an addict. The suspect was said to have a habit of sniffing petrol.
The suspect has a criminal record for causing grievous hurt in an unrelated case.
Anbalagan said further investigations need to be carried out to determine the motive behind the murder.
A blood-stained knife was also found near the tank and there were wounds on victim's neck, said Anbalagan.
"We believe the son is still around and we are looking for him," he said when met at the scene.
The case has since been classified under first-degree murder, where the mandatory punishment is a death sentence.
