PUTRAJAYA: Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and one of his brothers were taken to the Palace of Justice this morning to be remanded.
Abdul Azeez, 52, and two others in orange t-shirt were brought to the magistrate's court here by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at 10.30am.
Chants of "Hidup BN" were heard from several of his supporters who gathered at the court compound.
Abdul Azeez, who is the Baling MP, was picked up yesterday at 11.15am after giving his statement to the MACC.
His elder brother, a manager of a private company, was picked up at an undisclosed location in Sungai Buloh on the same day.
On May 23, a team of MACC personnel raided four locations including two of Azeez's residences in Subang Jaya and Baling as well as the Tabung Haji office and Putera 1Malaysia Club (KP1M) office here.
They seized RM500,000 in cash, foreign currencies worth half a million, 20 watches and several pieces of jewellery.
The foreign currencies reportedly include those from Britain, Vietnam, India, North Korea, UAE, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Qatar.
The former Tabung Haji chairman allegedly claimed that part of the money was from his Umno allocation while some foreign currencies were from (KP1M).
He also claimed then that the luxury watches were mainly counterfeits and were of little value but looked genuine.
Azeez was appointed to the Tabung Haji board in 2011 and made its chairman on July 1, 2013.
He tendered his resignation as Tabung Haji chairman on May 14 this year.
