Education Minister urges universities to develop employable graduates

PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik has urged universities to develop employable graduates who can compete and thrive better in a borderless world.
He said graduates now need to be prepared to face the fourth Industrial Revolution.
"Universities need to work harder to develop not just employable graduates but graduates who can compete and thrive in this borderless world," he said in his keynote speech after officiating Seeds for the Future, a global CSR flagship programme by Huawei at the Education Ministry today.
He added that the ministry is working closely with Huawei Malaysia and other companies through the CEO@Faculty 2.0 Programme.
"Under this programme, young university lecturers spend six months under the mentorship of industry leaders. This year, two lecturers Dr Nurhidayatullaili Muhd Julkapli from University Malaya (UM) and Dr Shankar Karuppayah from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USMA) have been selected to work with Huawei Malaysia," he said.
Maszlee added that the programme with over 1,000 participants from UM, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, University Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Multimedia University Malaysia had proven to be a success.
"The large number of participants this year not only shows the competitiveness of this programme, but it reflects the quality and relevance of Huawei's flagship CSR initiative," he said.
Maszlee also congratulated the ten winners of the programme, who will spend two weeks in Beijing and Shenzhen, where Huawei's headquarters is located.
"There they will witness first-hand the inner workings of a multinational ICT company. They will learn about trends in cloud computing, the Internet of Things, 5G technologies, and will join several technology workshops and networking events. They will even take Mandarin language and calligraphy classes as well as explore the city," he said.
