PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has withdrawn his support for Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi over her inaction with regards to the Rohingya crisis in her country.
In an interview with Turkish international news channel TRT World, Dr Mahathir said Suu Kyi has been a 'changed person' since she became the country's leader and in light of this crisis, she has not said anything against the unjust treatment of the Rohingya.
"Over this issue, she seems to be a changed person. She did not want to say anything against the action taken by the military against the Rohingyas. So, we make (it) quite clear that we don't really support her anymore," he told host Ghida Fakhry.
"We have tried to mediate. I have written to her, she has not replied," he added.
He said that he was 'disappointed' because when she was under house arrest, Malaysia was one of the country's that struggled to try and get her released.
"We condemn Myanmar for carrying out what appears to be genocide, we have not minced words about this, although our policy in Asean is non-interference of internal affairs in other countries, because it is grossly unjust, we have to voice our opinion," he stated.
Mahathir, who is currently in London as part of a working visit, had addressed the UN General Assembly on Friday on the state of the Rohingya people in Myanmar.
He had criticised the authorities in Myanmar and Suu Kyi for denying that the Rohingya people were being murdered, and their homes torched, forcing over a million to flee.
Mahathir had also questioned the world for keeping mum on the massacres that were being carried out.
Previously, United Nations investigators had said that Myanmar's military carried out mass killings and gang rape of Rohingya with "genocidal intent", and that its commander-in-chief and five senior generals should be prosecuted under international law.
