MCCF welcomes caning punishment for bribery offenders

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Community Care Foundation (MCCF) welcomed the proposal of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdull that corporal punishment be imposed on bribery offenders.
Its chairman, Halim Ishak said such punishment was necessary as fines and jail sentences alone were not enough to bring awareness to the corrupt so as not to repeat such acts which are seen as the mother of all forms of crime in the country.
"Corrupt practices are seen to be increasingly prevalent in Malaysian society, which if not addressed properly, will result in the spread of various forms of crime in the country including gambling, prostitution, illegal immigrants, human trafficking, weapons smuggling and others.
"However, MCCF suggests that corporal punishment be implemented as the givers as well as those who accept bribes are the main perpetrators in the crime. Thus, they should be subject to strict penalties including caning," he said in a statement here today.
"MACC should also play a more efficient role in ensuring that corruption among civil servants or private parties do not fester," he said.
Last Friday, Mohd Shukri said the MACC responded to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for an all out fight against corruption and bribery offenders to be sentenced to more severe corporal punishment such as caning. — Bernama
