Industry players urged to be active in assisting TVET players: Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged industry players to be more active in helping the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) programme to create human capital that is capable of taking Malaysia to achieve a developed nation status and become a 'world tiger'.
The Prime Minister said the involvement of the industrial sector particularly in skills competition such as WorldSkills Malaysia could enhance competency and the country's skilled labour force quality.
"I have strong confidence and trust that with the commitment and determination of all interested parties under the TVET and the full support of the industrial sector, we can all succeed in reviving and redeveloping our country to become a developed nation, respected as a world tiger," he said.
He said this in his speech at the 2018 Prime Minister's Golden Hand Award ceremony at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), today.
Also present were Human Resource Minister M. Kula Segaran and Deputy Works Minister Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir.
Mahathir said the involvement of the industrial sector in helping the TVET also indirectly contributed to the growth of the industry itself.
Expressing his amazement at the ability of the TVET students who could come up with new creations, he said this could facilitate the method of work of the industrial sector.
"As a result of their inventive thinking, we now see new products that had never been invented by anyone before, and the TVET students may develop further by thinking what else they could make to ease our work," he said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister reminded the people particularly the workers to practise three noble values namely diligence, trustworthiness and discipline in order to become an excellent work force.
"If we have these three values, I believe everyone of us, in fact our race will succeed because we will do anything at all in the best possible manner, be trustworthy and disciplined to avoid doing anything negative," he added.
At the event, Mahathir gave away the 2018 Prime Minister's Golden Hand Award for the Youth and Teaching category.
For the Youth category, the award was won by a student of the DRB-Hicom University of Automotive Malaysia, Simon Wong Tian Bing while for the Teaching category, the award was won by Mohamad Alim Nulhakim from the Jitra Industrial Training Institute.
Each winner won a cash prize of RM10,000 and a trophy each.
The top award was given to the best overall winner in the WorldSkills Malaysia competition held from Sept 20 until Oct 2. — Bernama
