PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has regarded his win in the Port Dickson by-election today as a political milestone for the ruling government.
The PKR president-elect, in his first press conference after the victory here, said he was extremely pleased and humbled by the result, gaining about 70% of the popular votes.
Anwar pointed this was a marked increase compared to the 48.2% received by his predecessor Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah in the 14th General Election (GE14).
“What is astounding is we managed to garner a favourable support from all the ethnic groups, with all the races giving a commanding endorsement to me. I must express my profound gratitude.
“This is a political milestone for us and a vote of confidence to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and the reform agenda. Thank you all,” he said, here, today.
Anwar said he had also phoned Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad right after his win, and that the latter had told him that he was pleased by the victory.
“He told me he was proud with the result, and I also thank him for his support and endorsement for me as the candidate here,” he said, adding that he was also thankful for the support shown by all the component parties in PH.
On his next move, Anwar said he would return to parliament on Monday for his swearing-in ceremony, and focus his efforts on assisting the current leaders in parliament.
“I will help those in the august house, especially senior leaders like Lim Kit Siang, to ensure the reform of parliament is smooth sailing and effective,” he said.
He added that he would meet with Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Aminuddin Harun soon to discuss on his pledges and plans for Port Dickson.
