Victim of Klang dryer explosion dies

KLANG: A 43-year-old man, who was injured after a laundry dryer exploded at a laundrette at Bandar Putera 2, Johan Setia here on Oct 4, died of his injuries today at the burn unit ward of the Sungai Buloh Hospital.
Klang South police chief ACP Shamsul Amar Ramli said the victim was pronounced dead at 8.30am and doctors classified the cause of death as severe burns and multi-organ failure.
He said the victim, who was initially warded at the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) here, was transfered to the Sungai Buloh Hospital on Thursday.
Shamsul Amar said the man's 14-year-old daughter, who was also injured and suffered burns in the incident, was reported to be recuperating and is able to consume small meals.
He said the teenager who is undergoing treatment for her scalded skin, was transfered from HTAR to the Selayang Hospital on Oct 8.
On Oct 4 at about 9am, the man had driven to the laundrette with his wife and two children to use the dryers at the place.
While his 41-year-old wife remained in the car with their younger child, the man and his teenage daughter walked in to the laundrette and filled up a dryer with their wet clothes.
When he unsuspectingly turned on the machine, he was greeted by a large explosion.
The father and daughter suffered severe burns and the explosion also damaged several other washing machines.
Investigators from the Fire and Rescue Department said there were technical faults to the dryer, where a gas leak had ignited the gas cylinders at a storage compartment at the rear of the machines.
Police hae ruled out foul play.
