KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Corporation Berhad (BCorp) CEO Datuk Seri Robin Tan, together with BCorp senior management and staff, paid a visit to Pertubuhan Perkhidmatan Sosial dan Pembangunan Komuniti (PSPK), as part of the Berjaya Cares Foundation (BCF) initiative today.
Located in Selayang, PSPK was established in 2006 to facilitate the development of underprivileged, abandoned and abused women through life skills training and counselling.
Approximately 300 women and children from the Malay, Chinese, Indian and Rohingya community are currently enrolled in programmes offered by PSPK which aim to teach self sustainability.
Programmes offered by the centre include baking classes for women, computer classes for children, and basic English language classes for both women and children.
Henry Sandanam, the founder of PSPK, said his main aim is to instill entrepreneurship through the classes taught at the centre.
"We want them to learn to grow so that they will be able to move up in the world.
"Through the various classes that are offered here to the women and children, we hope that they will be able to learn sustainability and hopefully start a business of their own.
"With skills developed through our classes, these women will be able to make a living for themselves by opening a bakery or a textile business," he said.
During today's visit, Tan and the BCorp team visited the bakery, mini sewing factory and computer room in the PSPK building.
Tan applauded PSPK for their efforts in reaching out to abandoned women and children from underprivileged communities.
"I commend PSPK for the relentless efforts and we (BCorp) hope they will continue empowering the less fortunate to be more economically independent and self-reliant," he said.
Tan also presented 220 ang pows to the women, children and volunteers at the centre.
The residents of the centre were also treated to a Kenny Rogers Roasters lunch and Krispy Kreme doughnuts for dessert.
Berjaya Cares Foundation (BCF) is committed to supporting projects which adopt a more holistic approach to equip and help deserving communities to build life skills that will empower them to create a more sustainable future for themselves.
Among the foundation's core focus areas are supporting educational programmes and initiatives for underprivileged children and youths, outreach programmes for poor communities, as well as providing humanitarian aid locally and internationally.
