KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has issued 56,680 summonses through the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) since it began operations on Sept 1.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaafar said 52,846 of these were speeding-related offences, while the remainder were for jumping the red light.
Awas is an integration of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras and Demerit Points System (Kejara).
"However, the number of traffic offenders who have settled their summonses is very, very low, and this is quite saddening," he told the Dewak Rakyat, here today.
Kamarudin was responding to a supplementary question by Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PAS-Dungun) on whether the government has plans to place AES cameras on other hot spots.
To this, he said any decisions regarding the camera's placements would be done on the advice and after engagement with the various agencies under the ministry.
Kamarudin also warned those who were issued Awas summonses to settle their fines immediately, or risk being blacklisted from the RTD system.
"Those blacklisted will no longer be able to deal with RTD until they settle their summonses. And this is our promise," he added.
Under Awas, those who are issued summonses are required to pay a fine of RM300 within 60 days, and failure to do so will result in being charged in court.
Should they fail to show up, their names will be blacklisted from engaging in any transaction involving the RTD.
