Court jails unemployed six years for robbery

PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man was sentenced to six years' jail and two strokes of the cane by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to robbing a Filipino maid at a bus stop two days ago.
Judge Azwarnida Affandi meted out the ruling on Mohd Zulfakor Mat Daud, 28, and ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence from the date of arrest on Oct 30.
He allegedly robbed Robledo Rochelle, 25, of an iPhone at the Jalan Gasing bus stop here at 7.30am on Oct 30 under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and fine or whipping.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Shafiq Hasim appealed to the court to impose a jail sentence against the accused, taking into account that he had previously been arrested nine times but had never been charged.
"I also ask the court to consider the fact of the case where the accused has taken advantage of the victim who wanted to help him. Please provide a suitable sentence that can teach a lesson to the accused and the public," Shafiq said.
However, the accused, who was unrepresented, appealed to the court on the grounds he had repented and would not repeat the same act in the future.
According to the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, the victim was waiting for the bus when the suspect approached her to ask for directions before grabbing her phone.
Caught by surprise, the victim chased the accused and coincidentally policemen on patrol immediately chased and nabbed the suspect. — Bernama
