KUALA LUMPUR: Those flying abroad will now have to fork out more, with a new levy to be introduced beginning June next year.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said RM20 would be charged on those travelling to Asean countries, while those travelling to other foreign destinations would be required to pay RM40 under the departure levy.
He said this during the 2019 Budget tabling in the Dewan Rakyat, here, today.
Lim added that under the Sales and Services Tax (SST) that was recently introduced, the Customs Department will increase its enforcement efforts on the smuggling of illegal cigarettes into the country.
"The government hopes to get at least RM1 billion in return through efforts of combating these smuggling activities," he said.
Lim added that beginning next year, the Inland Revenue Board would investigate any individuals who own questionable, extraordinary wealth.
"This (wealth) can be through the owning of luxurious items such as jewelleries, watches, handbags, luxury cars and land assets," he said.
