KUALA LUMPUR: The government will take actions necessary to reclaim all the funds that were missing or stolen from the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
Finance minister Lim Guan Eng said this in his Budget 2019 speech today at parliament adding that the government will not pay the balance US$4.32 billion (RM18 billion) dollars to International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC) or Aabar Investments PJS.
"We will also seek the right to recover the US$1.46 billion (RM6.08 billion) already paid to IPIC," he reiterated.
Attorney General Tommy Thomas said earlier that the application has been filed in a London high court, for an order to set aside a Consent Award recorded on May 9, 2017 by an Arbitration Tribunal sitting in London.
"Malaysia will claim that as a result of the fraud, we are relieved from any obligation to pay the balance of the US$4.32 billion (RM18 billion) to IPIC or Aabar under the Consent Award, and additionally have a right to recover the US$1.46 billion (RM6.08 billion) already paid," said Tommy.
He said Malaysia has a strong case and is confident of getting the money back.
Lim also said in his speech that Malaysia will begin international bids for super yacht Equanimity on Nov 5 to get back some of the 1MDB money.
