No fuel subsidy for luxury cars

KUALA LUMPUR: Luxury cars with engine capacity of 1,500cc or less will not get fuel subsidies as announced in Budget 2019.
"I can say that (owners of) luxury cars, don't hope to get the fuel subsidies," said Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng at a post-budget press conference in Parliament today.
It was announced yesterday that motorists driving cars with engine capacities below 1,500cc and riding motorcycles below 125cc can enjoy RON95 petrol at a lower price.
Eligible cars can receive the subsidy of up to 100 litres per month, while motorcycles are eligible for 40 litres per month.
Lim said this was targeted at the B40 group as they are from the lower income of society.
"The government initially wanted to target the B40 group only but upon consideration, may extend a bit to the M40 group," he said.
When asked how the mechanism would work, Lim said a mechanism is being worked out and they will announce it.
"We have until next year to work this out," he said.
Lim was responding to social media criticism that owners luxury cars of lower engine capacity could capitalise on the fuel subsidies meant for lower income groups.
