e-Scroll system to counter bogus degrees

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched the e-Scroll system to prevent paper qualification fraud
The e-Scroll system is a University Degree issuance and verification System based on Blockchain Technology which allows the verification of the authenticity of university Degrees worldwide via internet access.
In a statement released today, the Education Ministry said the move will preserve the integrity of Malaysian universities as well as prevent fraud which gives unqualified people an advantage over genuine students.
"(Fake Degree) buyers are prepared to spend up to half a million pound on bogus documents," it said.
"Sadly, they successfully join the workforce to become bogus doctors, consultants, nurses, whose 'expertise' our lives depend on, and bogus engineers whose products and construction we use every day."
The ministry added that the move is also implemented to combat inefficiency which is largely contributed by the huge volume of phone calls Malaysian universities receive on a daily basis to verify graduates authenticity.
"Currently, Malaysian universities receive thousands of request globally to verify their genuine graduates," it said.
"Such verification is still largely done via telephones and emails which contributes to its inefficiency."
In its current implementation, all PhD students from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) graduating in the convocation on Nov 10 will have their degree certificates embedded into the blockchain.
The authenticity of their doctorate can be verified instantly and globally.
Consequent to the launching, the MOE encourages other university and institutes of higher learning in Malaysia to adopt the system and join the University Consortium which was launched concurrently with the e-Scroll system which currently holds six public Universities.
