KUALA TERENGGANU: The increase in membership of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) of 10,000 people a month is proof of the people's support for the party, said its president Mohamad Sabu (pix).
He said the party, although established only three years ago, now had more than 100,000 members nationwide and the number increased drastically after the 14th general election last May.
What surprised him most, he said, was Kelantan, which is a PAS stronghold, for being the second highest state to contribute in terms of increase in Amanah membership, of 2,000 people a month.
"This also indirectly shows the people's acceptance of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad where Amanah is among the component parties," he said in his speech at the Terengganu Amanah annual convention yesterday.
The convention was attended by 300 party members, including Terengganu Amanah chairman Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah.
Mohamad said Amanah had many members in the west coast, with the highest in Selangor, followed by Kedah and, Johor.
Meanwhile, he refuted an allegation by PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man that Amanah was "stealing" PAS members because of an old vengeance.
Mohamad said stealing of party members did not exist in politics because all political parties would want to have many members to strengthen their party machinery.
"Any Malaysians can be an Amanah member. If PAS members want to join us, it is not that we steal them," he added. — Bernama
