Lau and Yong to clash for Gerakan presidency
KUALA LUMPUR: The battle lines for the Gerakan party leadership election were drawn today as outgoing Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai and outgoing deputy youth chief Andy Yong Kim Seng are in a straight fight for the president's post.
Candidates vying for the Gerakan deputy president's post are outgoing vice-presidents Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay and Oh Tong Keong.
The Gerakan Youth chief's post will also see a straight fight between Chew Teik Thye and Ooi Zhi Yi.
Blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin's daughter Raja Sara is also among the eight vice-presidential candidates who include Baljit Singh, G. Parameswaran, Syed Abdul Razak Syed Long, V. Prabagaran, Khoo Shiaw Lee, Choong Vee Hing and Yap Yeen Ming.
Meanwhile, 23 candidates won positions in the Gerakan Wanita central committee uncontested with Janice Wong named as the women's wing chief with Raja Sara Petra as her deputy.
The three Gerakan Wanita vice-chiefs are Soh Hoon Lee, Ooi Pei Nar and Yong Fui Ling.
This is Gerakan's first party polls since its defeat at the 14th General Election (GE14). The party election has been delayed since 2016 because of GE14.
After that election, Gerakan became an independent party when it exited from Barisan Nasional on June 23.
A total of 1,500 delegates from its branch, division and state level committees will be given the responsibility of selecting national leaders in the party polls on Nov 17.
