Sabah to study tax on petroleum products: Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will study the need to impose sales tax on petroleum products in the state, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said several aspects needed to be looked into when imposing tax on oil and gas products produced by the state.
"We will look into it (tax), anything that can bring increased revenue to Sabah, will be able to bring progress to the state. We'll see what's the best," he told a press conference after tabling the Sabah State Budget 2019 at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.
Meanwhile, Shafie said the state government would impose a five per cent tax on fishery products exported from the state.
He said the move was taken to control the supply of the products in the local market, especially in Sabah.
Marine products were not only marketed in the state but also abroad, he said, adding that it would not bring revenue to the state if no tax was imposed.
Therefore, the government has proposed that fish and fishery products that are sold outside the state will be imposed tax," he added. — Bernama
