KUALA LUMPUR: The government does not impose any restriction on any Member of Parliament to resign after being elected in the General Election but he or she is prevented from seeking re-election for five years after resignation.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said this was provided for under Article 48 (6) of the Federal Constitution.

He said this article was also stated in the State Constitution for any Member of the State Legislative Assembly who resigned.

Liew disclosed this in his written reply to Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abduh Aziz (PAS-Bachok) who asked whether the government intended to review the regulation preventing any Member of Parliament from resigning without any valid reason.

“This matter needs to be scrutinised in more detail before any decision can be made,“ said Liew in his reply which was circulated in the Dewan Rakyat today. — Bernama
