SIBU: Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday expressed his gratitude to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) and Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for approving the registration of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He said with the approval it would enable democracy to be practised in the interest of Malaysians in general and the people in Sarawak in particular.

“I am grateful to the RoS and Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the GPS’ approval.

“We will continue to carry out our duties for the interests of Sarawak and Malaysia,“ he said.

He said this to a reporter after officiating the Sekolah Kebangsaan Abang Ali’s 65th Appreciation and Graduation ceremony at the Sibu Suarah Hall here yesterday.

He believed the cooperation between political parties under GPS would benefit the people in the state.

Asked if the GPS logo would be launched, Abang Johari, who is also the GPS pro-tem chairman and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, said he would wait for the details on the GPS’ approval first before going to the next level.

This includes the entry of the United People’s Party (UPP) into the coalition that would only require the approval of three-quarters of its members.

“We have to wait for the certificate (of registration) first,“ he said.

The GPS was established by four former Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, namely, PBB, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) after quitting the BN following the defeat in the 14th General Election in May. — Bernama
