KUALA LUMPUR: The opening of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line extension since June has increased the number of its daily users by an average of 17,986 as at August, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri S. K. Devamany said the increase was contributed mostly by users of the Kelana Jaya line (Putra Heights to Gombak) at an average of 15,404 users daily.

"For the Ampang line, which covers the routes of Putra Heights, Sentul Timur and Ampang, the average increase is 2,582 users."

He said this in reply to Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) who wanted to know the daily average number of LRT users from 2011 to 2016 and the increase in the number of users after the opening of the line extension and new stations in June 2016.

Devamany said an average of 260,918 daily users were recorded for the Kelana Jaya LRT line, while the Ampang line recorded an average of 204,810 daily users, from 2011 to August 2016.

Last June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak graced the opening of the LRT line extension project, which involved a distance of 35.1km connecting both the Kelana Jaya and the Ampang/Sri Petaling lines. — Bernama
