KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Soo Wincci has earned herself a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first Miss World Malaysia to be awarded a PhD.
The former Miss World Malaysia 2008 got her Doctor of Philosophy (Business Administration) after studying six years at the Open University Malaysia (OUM).
Having done her degree and masters overseas, Soo chose to study her PhD locally as a way of contributing back to the country.
"Being from the entertainment line, I want to contribute to our own industry. And education is the way to go. This is something I have dreamed about," she told a press conference today, adding she hopes to motivate others, especially local artistes, to pursue their studies.
Malaysia Book of Records CEO Christopher Wong handed her the certificate at the event held at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
OUM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mansor Fadzil, who was also present, was happy that even celebrities are able to take their flexible approach to work and study at the same time.
Some 6,470 graduates are receiving their scrolls at the four-day OUM convocation held at PWTC.
