KUALA LUMPUR: The police officer responsible for “wrongly” arresting a doctor had made an apology, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said following the apology the issue has been resolved amicably.
“The police officer involved has apologised to the doctor. There were criminal activities going on in the area in Serdang and the doctor happened to be at the location police were conducting the operation.
“The doctor was wrongly arrested and the matter has been resolved in the best way,” he said when winding up the ministerial reply on 2017 Budget.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister was responding to V Sivakumar (DAP-Batu Gajah), who interjected asking for a clear explanation on the ministry’s action.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had reportedly refused to apologise for the false arrest while admitting that the incident was regrettable.
He had insisted that Dr Thanendran Renganathan was to be blamed for creating suspicion by running away during the raid on Oct 7, which was conducted to nab suspected robbers near Serdang Hospital.
The incident, which occurred at a food stall near the hospital had left the doctor injured and traumatised.
However, checks with those close and familiar with the case and the investigations into it revealed that no such apology as claimed was issued by the police.
