GEORGE TOWN: Three men who claimed to be policemen and extorted money from a businessman were arrested by police near here.
They were arrested on Nov 1 by a team of police dispatched from the Penang police contingent and Northeast district police headquarters after a police report was lodged by the 53 year-old victim.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said another two accomplice were also caught at Ampang.
"All suspects are aged between 23 to 58 years old and three of them have previous criminal records in drugs and motorcycle theft ", he said in a statement early on Wednesday.
Mior said on Oct 25, the three men approached the businessman while he was at the parking area in One Stop Midlands Park located along Jalan Burma.
The men allegedly identified themselves as police officers and told the victim that he was on the “wanted” list in Sarawak.
“The suspects took the victim to their car and handcuffed him while telling him that he was involved in a commercial case so he must pay RM30,000 to settle the case,” Mior said.
Mior said the victim was also taken on a drive to Kuala Kangsar before he was taken back to his office in George Town to withdraw money for them.
The victim handed RM20,000 to the suspects and he was dropped back at the One Stop Midlands Park car park before the suspects fled.
Three of the suspects have previous criminal records and the one arrested in Ampang was found in possession of 30 .38 calibre bullets.
“The suspect nabbed in Ampang was a former auxiliary police in Hulu Kelang and the Ampang police is now investigating where he had obtained the bullets,” he said.
Mior said the former auxiliary police will be remanded in Ampang while the other four will be remanded in Penang today.
