GEORGE TOWN: Residents staying near Sungai Pinang have had it with flash floods hitting their homes during bouts of heavy rain.

Those theSun spoke to today said water coming into their homes were a nightmare due to the trash and dirt being washed in as well as damaging their belongings.

Muhammad Riduan Ch'ng Abdullah, 40, said his family and him had to scrambled to save their valuables on Monday when flash floods hit Penang for the fourth time in just over a week.

He said his television, washing machine and fridge were damaged by the water.

“I have to buy a new washing machine and fridge,” he said when met at his house at Kampung Lorong Kulit.

Another villager Che Om Ibrahim, 60, was lucky as she had moved her valuables to higher places in preparation for the wet season.

“Still, something must be done to prevent floods, this cannot be allowed to continue,” she added.

Abu Bakar Ismail, 56, meanwhile lamented the spate of flooding this year was one of the worst he can remember.

He said it was terrible how flash floods could hit his home four times in about a week and called upon the relevant authorities to stem the tide.

“It feels like I have been cleaning my house non-stop,” he added.

In nearby Kampung Kebun Lama, Amir Osman, 39, wants the state and federal governments to quickly resolve the issue which has been plaguing flood prone areas around Sungai Pinang for decades.

He said the river should be deepened and called for short-term and long-term measures to be undertaken to address the issue.

“I have to clean up my house for three consecutive days this week alone, something has to be done,” he stressed.
