KLANG: The subsidised one-kilogramme polybag cooking oil are not recycled products and is of the same quality as those sold in bottles, said the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry.
Its minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said checks found that it is more costly to purchase used cooking oil to be processed.
"However, those involved will not be able to sell them at RM2.50 per kilogramme," he said after conducting an inspection with a team of officers at Pasar Besar Meru and Klang Utama here.
"So far, I have not found any recycled oil being sold in the market as claimed by others," he added.
The government according to Hamzah, had placed the Cloud Point (CP) 8 grade as the standard for cooking oil to be sold in the country.
He added that most of the cooking oil sold in Malaysia are of CP 8 and CP 7 grades while only several products offering CP6 are sold at higher price as it costs more to produce.
It is learnt that the difference between CP grades are the level of clearness and the boiling point, and it is clearer if the CP is lower.
Meanwhile, Soon Hup Edible Oil Sdn Bhd general manager Lee Chong Hua said cooking oil in Malaysia is not cost-efficient for recycling practice as the price of the cooking oil here is low.
"In China they demand for recycled products because a five-kilogramme cooking oil bottle can go for about RM70 and one bottle here is sold for about RM20.
"I have been in the industry since 2004 and I have not heard of any company that recycles cooking oil products.
"The cost of the recycling process is too high and it's not good for health," he added.
